The Client
Test and Measurement Hire Limited – a specialist
company hiring specialist testing and measurement equipment.
A small company established in 2000 offering a wide range of
specialist equipment.

Client’s Issues
As part of the company’s initial business plan, the company’s
directors established that an effective presence on the web was vital to
obtain the level of business necessary to the company.
Having invested heavily in a brochure and relying on existing
business contacts, the web was seen as a critical route to clients with
whom the company had no existing contact.
The website required was very large, as a key element was to accurately
portray the wide range of instruments offered by the company.
The graphical design of the website was to follow closely the
corporate image as shown in the company brochure.

search engine optimisation , supported by consultancy administrative and
technical support staff.
Approach to the Problem
The team leader reviewed the company brochure, proposed keyword phrase
tested these on the major search engines and directories and analysed
competition for the new website and the performance of key competition
identified by the company.
Based on this analysis and assessment the team leader and the company
directors agreed a series of the most appropriate keyword phrases for the
site and an overall structure and layout to ensure a user-friendly site
and compatibility with the brochure.
A key element in the company’s services is the ‘added value’ they
provide to their customers with advice and support in the selection of the
appropriate instrumentation and support during the hire.
On this basis, it was agreed that the website should reflect this
and encourage hirers/potential hirers to contact the company, preferably
by telephone, to discuss the requirements.
On line hiring was discarded on the company’s wishes to avoid an
impersonal approach.
The team leader, supported by consultant technical staff, developed a
website in accordance with the agreed brief, reviewed it with the company
directors, submitted it to the search engines and monitored performance
and amended it as necessary.
Results and Client Benefits
The website is highly indexed by the major search engines and
directories against the agreed keyword phrases.
The company do not have a procedure for identifying the source of each
enquiry but are confident that a very significant percentage of their
sales are directly attributed to the website.
The company won the New Business Start Up Award presented by Business
Link Cheshire and Warrington in 2002 and their sales have increased from
£156,000 to £450,000 in the period from 2000 to 2003.
Their website out performs their competitors (both large and small) and
has brought in international as well as national business.
The
company is now agreeing a new project with the consultant to review the
website to reflect a recently extended range of instrumentation and to
make a new service in the provision of environmental monitoring services
in addition to equipment hire.
Terms of Appointment
Formal terms of appointment were agreed between the
company and the consultant to cover the development, agreement, submission
and review of the website. In
addition to these formal arrangements, the consultant has supported and
reviewed the website on an ongoing basis and repaired damage caused by a
virus that entered through the company’s ISP.
